CASE STUDY
Monster Monster and Saint Surly approached me in early 2010 to create some illustrative artwork for their CD packaging of and album they were working together on. The brief for this job was “just do what ever you like, I’m sure it will look rad.” That’s an example of an ideal brief. If you have a brief like that, I would very much like to hear from you. For this project I took the concept of the title and names of the artists and just kind of ran with that. I through in some crows because I’m obsessed with them and some music tools for good measure. I like working with ink and colouring in photoshop, so i did a bit of that here. Am I boring you?
I’ve worked on several music based projects and a variety of DVD packaging projects. The outcome of a DVD, CD or Record package is always nice. Working in house for Billabong provided the opportunity to develop the art direction for a range of music, and DVD packaging on films by directors Jake Donlan, Jack McCoy and Bali Strickland.
Good music and DVD packaging always stands out. If it’s really good you’ll want ot pick it up off a shelf and if its really, really good then you might even want to smell or lick it. Or maybe not. Cohesively bringing together the ethos and vibe of a project as big as a film or album is exciting and illustration always gives these projects a head above the rest.
