CASE STUDY

While working for human ventures as a senior designer between 2008 – 2010, Aleem Ali, the previous creative director and I were taken by a serious of ‘infographics’ that good magazine produced. So empowered by the desire to illustrate statistical information with a purpose we developed an infographic to convey our perplexity toward the racist rhetoric of pre-enlightment era, southern cross tattoo sporting, beer swilling, Accadacca loving Australian men (AKA Bogans).

Ever since first using illustrator at university in 1998 I have been in love with vector graphics. I love that an entire style has prolificated due to the technology. The versatility and adaptability of vector graphics have enable illustrations to be bold, beautiful and sharp. The way they should be. Illustrator is more than a tool, it’s a friend, I love you illustrator, thank you for stealing me from that lazy hussy freehand so many years ago.

The key to good vector graphics is drawing first. A good reference and concept will always win out in the long run. I like to think through an issue and explore and experiment with various visual approaches before settling upon a winning solution. Once you know where you are going, vector illustration can take a long time to execute however the results are always compelling.
